Pain and Inflammation

What is Pain and Inflammation

Pain is a general term that describes uncomfortable sensations in the body. It stems from activation of the nervous system. Everyone experiences pain differently due to their different pain tolerance level; some people feel pain that range from annoying to debilitating, some may feel like a sharp stab or dull ache. Pain may also be described as throbbing, pinching, stinging, burning, or sore. Pain can be described as a signaling tool that informs us that something is wrong and hints to us on what is the cause, making it easier for you and healthcare professionals to make accurate and proper diagnosis.

Type of Pain

Acute Pain

Develops over a short period of time

Chronic Pain

Last, or comes and goes, over multiple months of years

Nociceptive Pain

Caused by tissue damage

Functional Pain

Caused by damage to the nerve

Inflammation is a process by which your body's white blood cells and the things your immune system produces that protect you from infection caused by bacteria and viruses. Inflammation can be acute (short-lived) or chronic (long-lasting), which depends on the cause of the inflammation.

Sometimes, inflammation is not caused by infection from outside invaders. It can also be caused by autoimmune diseases. An autoimmune disease is a condition in which your immune system acts as if regular tissues are infected or somehow unusual. This causes your immune system to mistakenly attacks your body, thus triggering inflammation. One example of an autoimmune disease is arthritis.
